Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family, which includes both pro- and anti-apoptotic regulators involved in diverse cellular processes.
BCL-X proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the VDAC channel, controlling mitochondrial membrane potential and the release of cytochrome C, both key events in apoptosis induction.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms:
- The longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor.
- The shorter isoform acts as an apoptotic activator.
