Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein consisting of a single polypeptide chain (approximately 80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is found in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions, and in neutrophil secondary granules.
Lactoferrin plays key roles in:
- Regulation of iron homeostasis
- Host defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Regulation of cell growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
LTF serves as a major first-line defense against microbial infections by binding and removing Fe³⁺ from the environment. It also exhibits bactericidal and proteolytic activities. Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) are known, and LTF receptors are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
