Target Information
The Drosophila atonal gene encodes a protein with basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domains that play a crucial role in nervous system development.
Mammalian atonal homolog 1 (MATH-1, also known as Atoh1, Ath1, or HATH-1) is a 351-amino-acid HLH transcription factor structurally homologous to the Drosophila atonal gene product.
In mice, MATH-1 expression begins around embryonic day 9.5, initially localized to cranial ganglia and the dorsal central nervous system. Expression becomes restricted to the external granular layer of the cerebellum by day 18 and is undetectable in adults.
MATH-1 is suggested to regulate differentiation of neural cell subsets via activation of E-box-dependent transcription.
