Target Information

Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFPs, vimentin is expressed along with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin plays a role in steroid synthesis by serving as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to intermediate filament breakdown and activation of ATP- and myosin light chain-dependent contractile events, facilitating lipid droplet interaction with mitochondria and enhancing steroid synthesis.
