Target Information

Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin is co-expressed with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It plays a role in steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin induces cytoskeletal changes that facilitate cholesterol transport to mitochondria, enhancing steroidogenesis.
