Target Information

The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, the receptor translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.

AR signaling is essential for the development and function of male reproductive organs such as the prostate and epididymis, and also influences nonreproductive organs including muscle, hair follicles, and brain. It functions as a phosphoprotein regulating MAP kinase pathways. Dysregulation or mutation of AR is associated with prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, male infertility, and complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS).
