Target Information

Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal life. In adults, AFP expression is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma, though hereditary persistence may occur without pathology. AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, with both genes located tandemly on chromosome 4. AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms and can bind copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin. AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to detect renal protein loss and screen for spina bifida and anencephaly. Elevated serum AFP is found in hepatocellular carcinoma, teratoblastoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and germ cell neoplasms.
