Target Information

Functions in nuclear protein import as a nuclear transport receptor. Serves as a receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates. Mediates docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through binding to nucleoporin, followed by translocation through the pore via an energy-dependent, Ran-mediated mechanism.
At the nucleoplasmic side of the NPC, Ran binding causes dissociation of the importin/substrate complex, and importin is re-exported to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran.
This directionality of nuclear import is conferred by asymmetric distribution of GTP- and GDP-bound forms of Ran between cytoplasm and nucleus.
Importin 9 mediates nuclear import of H2B histone, RPS7, and RPL18A, prevents cytoplasmic aggregation of RPS7 and RPL18A, and may also import H2A, H3, H4 histones, RPL4, and RPL6.
