Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family, belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. Two subgroups of the CEA family—the CEA cell adhesion molecules and the pregnancy-specific glycoproteins—are located within a 1.2 Mb cluster on chromosome 19. Eleven pseudogenes of the CEA cell adhesion molecule subgroup are also found in this cluster.

The encoded protein was initially described as biliary glycoprotein in liver bile ducts and later identified as a cell-cell adhesion molecule expressed on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia. It mediates cell adhesion through homophilic and heterophilic interactions with other subgroup proteins.

This protein is implicated in multiple cellular processes, including tissue differentiation and organization, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and modulation of immune responses. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been reported, though not all are fully characterized.
