Influenza A (H1N1) virus is a subtype of influenzavirus A and the most common cause of influenza (flu) in humans. A strain of swine-origin H1N1 was responsible for the 2009 flu pandemic. HA (Hemagglutinin) is an antigenic glycoprotein found on the surface of the H1N1 virus and is responsible for binding the virus to the cell being infected.
This antibody was developed in rabbit using a KLH-coupled synthetic peptide within residues 200–250 of Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus HA protein (GenBank: CY039999).
Target Information
Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, killing more than 30,000 people per year in the USA. In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in specimens obtained from patients in Mexico and the United States. The virus spread globally, leading the World Health Organization to declare a pandemic on June 11, 2009.
Influenza A virus possesses one of sixteen possible Hemagglutinin (HA) surface proteins and one of nine possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins:
- HA facilitates viral attachment.
- NA is involved in viral release.
These proteins elicit immune responses that prevent infection or reduce viral replication. The genetic composition of the 2009 swine flu H1N1 strain combines human, swine, and avian influenza genes with additional pig H3N2 virus genes from Eurasia. The distinct antigenic properties of this strain compared with seasonal influenza A (H1N1) suggest limited human immunity, though older age groups may retain partial protection.
