Target Information
Voltage-gated K⁺ channels in the plasma membrane regulate repolarization and action potential frequency in neurons, muscles, and other excitable cells. The KV gene family encodes more than 30 proteins forming K⁺ channel subunits with diverse properties.
Functional KV channels assemble as tetramers of pore-forming alpha subunits (KV1–KV4) and accessory KV-subunits that modulate gating properties.
KV beta.3 is an accessory K⁺ channel protein that regulates the activity of the pore-forming alpha subunit and alters Kv1.5 function. It localizes to the cytoplasm and is expressed mainly in the brain—highest in the cerebellum, weakest in frontal and temporal lobes. No expression is detected in heart, spinal cord, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, placenta, or skeletal muscle.
