Target Information

G protein-coupled inwardly rectifying potassium channels (Kir3.1–Kir3.4) are associated with numerous neurotransmitter receptors in the brain. They are abundantly expressed in regions such as the olfactory bulb, hippocampus, neocortex, dentate gyrus, cerebellar cortex, and thalamus.
Also known as GIRK channels, Kir3 proteins localize to soma, dendrites, and axons of neurons. Gβγ subunits released from G protein heterotrimers regulate Kir3 channel activity: Gβ3/Gβ4-containing dimers enhance K⁺ current, while Gβ5-containing dimers inhibit it. Kir3 activity is also inhibited by tyrosine phosphorylation. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) activates receptor tyrosine kinase B, which phosphorylates Kir3 tyrosine residues, inactivating the channel.
