BMAL1은 기본 헬릭스-루프-헬릭스(bHLH) 단백질로, CLOCK 단백질과 이합체를 형성하여 PER1 유전자 상류의 E-box에 결합합니다. 이 복합체는 PER1 및 기타 생체 리듬 관련 유전자의 발현을 활성화합니다. 세 가지 전사 변이가 확인되었으며, 두 가지 다른 아이소폼을 암호화합니다.
