Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the family of pyridine nucleotide oxidoreductases. The protein reduces thioredoxins and other substrates, playing a role in selenium metabolism and protection against oxidative stress. The enzyme functions as a homodimer using FAD as a cofactor, with each subunit containing a selenocysteine residue essential for catalytic activity. The selenocysteine is encoded by a UGA codon, recognized as Sec through the SECIS element in the 3' UTR. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding identical or distinct isoforms.
