Target Information
Eukaryotic cells contain three types of prenyltransferases that attach either a farnesyl (15 carbons) or a geranylgeranyl (20 carbons) group via thioether linkage to C-terminal cysteine residues of various proteins. These posttranslational modifications enable membrane localization of proteins lacking transmembrane domains.
CAAX farnesyltransferase (FTase) attaches a farnesyl group from farnesyl pyrophosphate to cysteine residues at the fourth position from the C terminus in proteins ending with the CAAX box (C = cysteine, A = aliphatic amino acid, X = methionine or serine).
The FNTB gene, encoding the beta subunit of CAAX farnesyltransferase, is mapped to chromosome 14q23–q24 by Southern blot hybridization and PCR analyses.
