Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF)는 염색질 응축과 DNA 절편화를 유도하는 단백질로, 세포사멸(apoptosis) 과정에서 핵으로 이동하여 미토콘드리아에서 apoptogenic 단백질(cytochrome c, caspase-9 등)의 방출을 촉진합니다.
AIF는 인간과 생쥐에서 높은 보존성을 가지며 널리 발현됩니다. AIF 유전자 돌연변이는 복합 산화적 인산화 결핍증 6을 유발하여 심각한 미토콘드리아 뇌병증을 초래할 수 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사 변이체가 존재하며, 염색체 10에 관련된 유사유전자(pseudogene)가 확인되었습니다.
