Heme oxygenase는 heme 대사에 필수적인 효소로, heme을 biliverdin으로 절단하고 biliverdin은 biliverdin reductase에 의해 bilirubin으로 전환됩니다. 또한 carbon monoxide를 생성하며, 이는 신경전달물질로 작용할 수 있습니다.
Heme oxygenase 활성은 heme 및 다양한 비-heme 물질에 의해 유도됩니다.
이 효소는 유도형 heme oxygenase-1(HMOX1)과 구성형 heme oxygenase-2(HMOX2)의 두 가지 isozyme으로 존재합니다.
