Target Information

Leptin is a 167 amino acid long protein hormone with important effects in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. It is approximately 16 kDa in mass and encoded by the obese (ob) gene. Leptin is predominantly expressed by adipocytes, correlating with total body fat mass. Smaller amounts are secreted by epithelial cells of the stomach and placenta.

Leptin receptors are highly expressed in hypothalamic regions regulating feeding behavior, hunger, and energy expenditure, as well as in T lymphocytes and vascular endothelial cells. Leptin plays roles in hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune response, pubertal development, and fetal growth. It has thermogenic actions and regulates fatty acid oxidation enzymes. Defects in leptin production can cause severe hereditary obesity in rodents and humans.
