KRT16 is a member of the keratin gene family, encoding intermediate filament proteins that maintain epithelial cell structural integrity.
Type I cytokeratins are acidic proteins paired with heterotypic keratin chains, clustered on chromosome 17q12–q21.
KRT16 is coexpressed with keratin 14 in epithelial tissues such as esophagus, tongue, and hair follicles.
Mutations in KRT16 are associated with:
- Type 1 pachyonychia congenita
- Non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma
- Unilateral palmoplantar verrucous nevus
