Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD2, a 50 kDa glycoprotein present on human peripheral blood T lymphocytes and NK cells; also expressed by all thymocytes.

Target Information

CD2 (LFA-2) is a monomeric surface antigen (MW range 45–58 kDa) expressed on all peripheral blood T cells. It is one of the earliest T-cell markers, found on over 95% of thymocytes and some NK cells, but not on B lymphocytes.
Monoclonal antibodies against CD2 inhibit rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes, indicating CD2’s role as or association with the erythrocyte receptor. The CD2–CD58 interaction stabilizes adhesion between T cells and antigen-presenting or target cells.
T cell activation increases CD2 expression and mobility, enhancing contact with CD58 and strengthening intercellular adhesion. CD2 deficiency is associated with reduced intestinal inflammation and altered immune control.
Diseases linked to CD2 dysfunction include penile squamous cell carcinoma and immune deficiency due to thymus absence.
