Target Information
Humanin is a novel 24 amino acid polypeptide identified in Alzheimer’s disease-affected brain. It shows 99% homology to mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA and functions as a neuroprotective and cytoprotective factor. Humanin inhibits neuronal cell death induced by beta-amyloids and Alzheimer’s disease-causing FAD genes by blocking FPRL1 receptor access to beta-amyloids.
It acts as an anti-apoptotic factor by binding to Bcl-2/Bax family proteins (Bax, Bak, Bid, BimEL) and inhibiting their pro-apoptotic activity. Humanin activates the JAK/STAT signaling pathway and is regulated by TRIM11. It interacts with IGFBP-3, blocking IGFBP-3-induced cell death in glioblastoma cells. Expression is also observed in colon and testis.
