Target Information
Pyridoxal kinase (PDXK) converts vitamin B6 to pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP), an essential cofactor in amino acid and neurotransmitter metabolism. The PDXK gene encodes a 312-amino acid polypeptide with pyridoxal kinase activity. A 1.5-kb PDXK transcript is expressed in all tissues and shows circadian oscillations. Expression in mouse liver and brain is regulated by the PAR bZIP transcription factors (Dbp, Hlf, Tef). Mice lacking these factors exhibit reduced brain PLP, serotonin, and dopamine levels, and are prone to spontaneous and audiogenic epilepsies.
