Target Information
Pyridoxal kinase (PDXK) converts vitamin B6 to pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP), an essential cofactor in amino acid and neurotransmitter metabolism.
The human PDXK gene encodes a 312-amino acid polypeptide, with a major 1.5-kb transcript expressed ubiquitously.
Expression of PDXK shows circadian oscillations and is regulated by PAR bZIP transcription factors (Dbp, Hlf, Tef).
Mice lacking these factors exhibit reduced brain PLP, serotonin, and dopamine levels, and show high susceptibility to spontaneous and audiogenic epilepsies.
