Target Information
Pyridoxal kinase (PDXK) converts vitamin B6 to pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP), an essential cofactor in amino acid and neurotransmitter metabolism.
The PDXK gene encodes a 312-amino acid polypeptide with pyridoxal kinase activity. A 1.5-kb transcript is expressed in all tissues tested and shows circadian oscillations.
Expression of Pdxk in mouse liver and brain is regulated by the PAR bZIP transcription factors (Dbp, Hlf, Tef). Mice lacking these factors exhibit decreased levels of brain PLP, serotonin, and dopamine, and show susceptibility to epileptic seizures.
