Target Information
Homeobox-containing genes are thought to play a key role in developmental regulation. In Drosophila, the engrailed (en) gene is essential for segmentation and posterior compartment formation. Mutations in mouse homologs En1 and En2 cause developmental defects that can be lethal. The human homologs EN1 and EN2 encode homeodomain-containing proteins involved in pattern formation during central nervous system development.
