This antibody is specific for endogenous levels of the ~24 kDa UCHL1 protein.

Target Information

PGP9.5 (Protein Gene Product 9.5, UCH-L1, PARK5) is a neuron-specific protein, distinct from neuron-specific enolase, with a molecular weight of approximately 27 kDa. It belongs to the ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase family (peptidase family C12) and possesses both hydrolase and ligase activities, generating ubiquitin monomers from small C-terminal adducts.

PGP9.5 is widely expressed in neurons and nerve fibers throughout the central and peripheral nervous system, as well as in neuroendocrine cells, renal tubules, spermatogonia, Leydig cells, ova, and corpus luteum cells. Overexpression is associated with non-small cell lung cancer, while decreased expression is linked to Huntington and Alzheimer diseases.

Because of its neuronal specificity and presence in cellular inclusions, PGP9.5 serves as a valuable neuronal marker and is useful in studies of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson disease.
