Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the MHC class I complex. It is expressed on various cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes. It also circulates freely in plasma.
The amino acid sequence of beta-2-microglobulin is homologous to immunoglobulin constant regions, forming a β-pleated sheet structure. It is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells. The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15, and mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Beta-2-microglobulin levels are used as a renal function marker and prognostic indicator for HIV infection.
