This antiserum is directed against human c-Myc and is useful for detecting its presence in various assays. Anti-c-Myc is highly specific and shows no cross-reaction with N-Myc or L-Myc proteins.
Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is commonly activated in various tumor cells and plays an essential role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK regulates its activity in cell proliferation and cycle control. c-Myc is critical for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in tumor development.
The c-Myc oncogene (p62 c-Myc) regulates normal cellular proliferation and differentiation, while its deregulated expression can induce apoptosis. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize overexpressed proteins containing Myc epitope tags fused to either amino- or carboxy-termini of target proteins.
Amplification of the c-Myc gene has been observed in several human tumors, including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. N-Myc amplification is associated with neuroblastomas. Translocation of the c-Myc locus on chromosome 8 to immunoglobulin loci on chromosomes 14, 2, or 22 is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders.
Aberrant c-Myc expression has been reported in tumors of various origins, including colorectal, gastric, hepatic, mammary, ovarian, pulmonary, prostatic, thyroidal, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
