Target Information

The KIR (inwardly rectifying potassium channel) family of potassium channels allows potassium ions to flow more readily into the cell than out.
KIR4.1 (KCNJ10) is highly expressed in the brain, including glial cells, astrocytes, and cortical neurons. It is also found in myelin-synthesizing oligodendrocytes and plays a crucial role in myelination during nervous system development.
The human KIR4.1 gene maps to chromosome 1.
KIR4.2, expressed in kidney, lung, heart, thymus, and thyroid, maps to chromosome 21 and may be associated with Down syndrome pathogenesis.
KIR5.1 forms functional channels only when coexpressed with KIR4.1 or KIR4.2 in the kidney and pancreas.
