Target Information

The KIR (inwardly rectifying potassium channel) family allows potassium to flow preferentially into the cell.
KIR4.1 (Kir1.2) is highly expressed in brain tissue, including glial cells, astrocytes, and cortical neurons.
It is also found in myelin-synthesizing oligodendrocytes and is essential for myelination during nervous system development.
The human KIR4.1 gene is located on chromosome 1.
KIR4.2 (Kir1.3) is expressed in kidney, lung, heart, thymus, and thyroid during development and maps to chromosome 21, possibly linked to Down syndrome pathogenesis.
KIR5.1 forms functional channels only when coexpressed with KIR4.1 or KIR4.2 in kidney and pancreas.
