Target Information

Cardiac Troponin I (Cardiac-specific troponin I, TnI, Troponin I) is an integral inhibitory protein in cardiac muscle that forms a complex with troponin C (TnC) and troponin T (TnT).
The TnT subunit binds to tropomyosin, forming a troponin-tropomyosin complex anchored by TnI binding to actin within muscle thin filaments.
Calcium binding to TnC induces structural changes that release the inhibitory region of TnI, allowing myosin attachment and muscle contraction.

Measurements of blood TnI and TnT levels are key diagnostic indicators of cardiac muscle damage, useful for differentiating angina and myocardial infarction.
Cardiac Troponin I also inhibits angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro.
Mutations in the Cardiac Troponin I gene cause familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).
