Target Information

Cardiac Troponin I (Cardiac-specific troponin I, TnI, Troponin I) is an integral inhibitory protein in cardiac muscle that functions as part of a complex with troponin C (TnC) and troponin T (TnT).
The TnT subunit binds to tropomyosin to form a troponin-tropomyosin complex anchored by the binding of TnI to actin within muscle thin filaments.
When calcium binds to specific sites on TnC, it induces a structural change that releases the inhibitory region of TnI from actin, enabling myosin attachment and muscle contraction.

Measurement of blood TnI and TnT levels is an important diagnostic indicator of heart muscle damage and helps differentiate angina from myocardial infarction.
Cardiac Troponin I has also been shown to inhibit angiogenesis both in vivo and in vitro.
Mutations in the Cardiac Troponin I gene are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).
