Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD11a (alpha subunit of human LFA-1), a 170–180 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on B and T lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils.
Functional Application: Blocking

Target Information

CD11a (LFA-1 alpha, ITGAL) together with CD18 forms leukocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1), an αLβ2 integrin. CD11a is involved in leukocyte adhesion through interactions with ICAM-1, -2, and -3, and plays a role in lymphocyte costimulatory signaling. It is expressed on leukocytes in a low-affinity state, which converts to a high-affinity form upon cell activation.
CD11a is important in immune cell interactions, tissue localization, differentiation, proliferation, and T-cell effector functions. Blocking CD11a function is a therapeutic approach for inflammatory diseases; for example, the humanized anti-CD11a antibody Efalizumab (Raptiva) inhibits T cell migration. Simvastatin binding to CD11a also leads to immunomodulatory effects.
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms of CD11a have been identified. Diseases associated with CD11a dysfunction include benign cephalic histiocytosis and leukocyte adhesion deficiency.
