Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. They separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). UCPs facilitate anion transfer across the mitochondrial membrane and proton return transfer, reducing mitochondrial membrane potential.
UCP1 is expressed specifically in brown adipose tissue, which functions in heat production. The exact mechanism of proton transfer by UCPs remains unclear, though they contain three homologous MACP domains.
