Target Information
The SMN complex plays a catalytic role in the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), which are essential components of the spliceosome. It is crucial for the splicing of cellular pre-mRNAs. Most spliceosomal snRNPs contain a common set of Sm proteins (SNRPB, SNRPD1, SNRPD2, SNRPD3, SNRPE, SNRPF, and SNRPG) that assemble into a heptameric ring on the Sm site of small nuclear RNA to form the core snRNP. In the cytosol, these Sm proteins are initially held in an inactive 6S pICln-Sm complex by the chaperone CLNS1A. The SMN complex mediates dissociation of CLNS1A and facilitates the formation and nuclear transport of core snRNPs.
