Target Information
The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure composed of 28 non-identical subunits (two rings of 7 alpha subunits and two rings of 7 beta subunits). Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and function in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway to cleave peptides. The immunoproteasome variant processes class I MHC peptides.
The PSMB7 gene encodes a member of the proteasome B-type (T1B) family, a 20S core beta subunit. Expression is downregulated by gamma interferon, and proteolytic processing is required for maturation. This subunit is absent in the immunoproteasome, where it is replaced by catalytic subunit 2i (proteasome beta 10 subunit).
