Product Specific Information

This antibody detects endogenous levels of GFAP only when phosphorylated at Serine 38.

Target Information

GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) is a member of the class III intermediate filament protein family. It is specifically expressed in astrocytes and certain astroglia of the central nervous system, satellite cells of peripheral ganglia, and non-myelinating Schwann cells. GFAP serves as a marker for astrocytic cells and is expressed in various brain tumors derived from astrocytic cells. It is also found in lens epithelium, Kupffer cells, some salivary tumor cells, and erythrocytes. GFAP helps distinguish astrocytes from other glial cells during development. Mutations in GFAP cause Alexander disease, a rare astrocytic disorder. Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms.
