It acts as a cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, interacting with and dephosphorylating CDK2 kinase, thereby preventing its activation. This gene has been reported to be deleted, mutated, or overexpressed in several types of cancers. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
