ALDH4A1은 aldehyde dehydrogenase 단백질 계열에 속하며, 미토콘드리아 매트릭스에서 NAD 의존성 탈수소효소로 작용합니다. 이 효소는 프롤린 분해 경로의 두 번째 단계를 촉매하여 pyrroline-5-carboxylate를 glutamate로 전환합니다.
ALDH4A1 결핍은 Type II hyperprolinemia와 관련이 있으며, 이는 delta-1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C)와 프롤린의 축적을 특징으로 하는 상염색체 열성 질환입니다.
