Target Information

This gene encodes subunit 1 of the splicing factor 3a (SF3A1) protein complex. The SF3A complex consists of subunits 1, 2, and 3, and is essential for converting 15S U2 snRNP into an active 17S particle involved in pre-mRNA splicing.
Subunit 1 belongs to the SURP protein family, characterized by SURP motifs mediating RNA binding. The amino-terminal half contains tandem SURP motifs, while the carboxy-terminal half includes a proline-rich region and a ubiquitin-like domain.
Binding studies show SURP motifs are necessary for interaction with subunit 3, with possible contacts to subunit 2 through carboxy-terminal sequences. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
