RNF2 (E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase RING2)는 히스톤 H2A의 Lys-119 위치를 단일 유비퀴틴화(H2AK119Ub)하는 리가아제로, 히스톤 코드 및 유전자 조절에 중심적인 역할을 합니다. BMI1/PCGF4에 의해 리가아제 활성이 증가하며, H2AK119Ub는 전사 억제 및 암컷 포유류의 X 염색체 불활성화에 관여합니다. RNF2는 Polycomb group (PcG) PRC1 복합체의 필수 구성 요소로, 발생 과정 전반에 걸쳐 Hox 유전자 등의 전사 억제 상태를 유지하는 데 필요합니다. PRC1 복합체는 크로마틴 구조 변형 및 히스톤 수정을 통해 유전적으로 안정된 전사 억제 상태를 형성합니다.
