Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor required for early nervous system development. It is expressed in fetal brain and essential for the proper formation and survival of autonomic neurons. ASCL1 interacts with MEF-2A to regulate genes critical for neuronal circuit formation in the central nervous system. High ASCL1 expression in neuroendocrine tumors, such as medullary thyroid cancer and small cell lung cancer, makes it a useful marker for cancers with neuroendocrine features. The ASCL1 gene maps to human chromosome 12 and contains a trinucleotide repeat region, making it a potential candidate for inherited diseases.
