Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor required for early development of the nervous system. It is expressed in fetal brain and essential for the development and survival of autonomic neurons. ASCL1 interaction with MEF-2A may regulate gene expression critical for neuronal circuit formation in the central nervous system. High ASCL1 expression in neuroendocrine tumors—such as medullary thyroid cancer, small cell lung cancer, and lung cancers with neuroendocrine features—makes it a useful marker for such cancers. The ASCL1 gene maps to human chromosome 12 and contains a trinucleotide repeat region, which may be associated with inherited disease.
