Target Information

The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) family of proteins share similar domain structures and are involved in signal transduction from cell surface receptors to the actin cytoskeleton. These proteins are regulated by multiple stimuli and interact with various partners, including the small GTPase Cdc42 and the cytoskeletal organizing complex Arp2/3.
Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is a rare, X-linked recessive disease characterized by immune dysregulation and microthrombocytopenia, caused by mutations in the WAS gene. The WAS gene product is a cytoplasmic protein expressed exclusively in hematopoietic cells, which show signaling and cytoskeletal abnormalities in patients. A transcript variant with an alternative promoter and distinct 5′ UTR sequence has been described, though its full-length nature remains unknown.
