Target Information

In intact cells, DNA associates with histones and other nuclear proteins to form chromatin. Chromatin remodeling, regulated by acetylation and deacetylation of histones, plays a key role in transcriptional regulation.
Histone acetylation increases accessibility of DNA to transcription factors, while deacetylation is linked to transcriptional silencing.
Mammalian HDAC8, isolated from human kidney, is a nuclear histone deacetylase with homology to other HDACs but distinct tissue distribution. It is involved in tissue development and cancer etiology.
