Target Information
Nearly all mucosal surfaces are protected by mucin transmembrane glycoproteins, from bronchioles to corneas to reproductive tracts.
Mucin 4 (MUC4) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein important for protection and lubrication.
Aberrant MUC4 expression is observed in multiple carcinomas and sarcomas, including fibromyoxoid sarcoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
Immunohistochemical staining for MUC4 has been proposed as a potential biomarker for cancer detection.
MUC4 is also linked to certain diseases prevalent in Asian populations, such as Taiwanese infertility, endometriosis, and gallstone formation in Chinese men.
Because of its critical role in mucosal surface protection, MUC4 dysfunction is associated with metastatic cancer progression.
