Target Information
Nearly all mucosal surfaces are protected by mucin transmembrane glycoproteins, from bronchioles to corneas to reproductive tracts.
Mucin 4 (MUC4) is membrane-bound and plays an important role in protection and lubrication.
MUC4 expression is aberrant in various carcinomas and sarcomas, including fibromyoxoid sarcoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
Immunohistochemical staining for MUC4 has been discussed as a potential biomarker for detection of these cancers.
MUC4 abnormalities are notably associated with certain Asian diseases, such as Taiwanese infertility, endometriosis, and gallstone formation in Chinese men.
Given its critical role in mucosal surface protection, MUC4 dysfunction has been implicated in metastatic cancer invasion.
