Target Information
Nearly all mucosal surfaces are protected by mucin transmembrane glycoproteins, from bronchioles to corneas to reproductive tracts. Mucin 4 (MUC4) is membrane-bound and important for protection and lubrication.
MUC4 expression is aberrant in many carcinomas and sarcomas, including fibromyoxoid sarcoma and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical staining for MUC4 has been proposed as a potential biomarker for detecting these cancers.
MUC4 abnormalities are notably associated with certain Asian diseases, such as Taiwanese infertility, endometriosis, and gallstone formation in Chinese men, where similar conditions in other populations lack these MUC4 mutations.
Given its role in mucosal surface protection, MUC4 dysfunction has been implicated in metastatic cancer progression.
