Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFPs, vimentin is expressed with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. Vimentin also plays a role in steroid synthesis by regulating cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal reorganization, facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria and promoting steroidogenesis.
