Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is believed to be involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFP proteins, vimentin is expressed along with desmin during early cellular development, and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin has been implicated in steroid synthesis regulation via its role as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and activation of contractile events, facilitating lipid droplet interaction with mitochondria and enhancing steroid synthesis.
